In May 2020 I applied for an internship position with Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association in Haddon Twp, NJ where
Executive Director, Janet Goehner-Jacobs welcomed me to the team! In this role I helped support the conservation efforts of a 26-acre old-growth forest surrounded by dense population and development. Stepping into this forest allows you to "step back in time" with some trees estimated to be nearly 300 years old. I enjoyed my internship experience so much that I opted to remain active as a volunteer where I continue to participate regularly in board meetings, special projects, community outreach events, and frequently make regular trips to monitor and maintain various aspects of the woods. I continue to have an active role with SWCA as one of their volunteer board of directors. focuses on Science Research and Communications. In 2023, I helped put together and lead a series of monthly nature walks.
Saddler's Woods is steeped in rich history: in the mid-1800’s, Joshua Saddler escaped slavery from a Maryland plantation and settled nearby on the edge of this woods. In his Will he made a bequest to protect the trees on his property. Formerly known as the MacArthur Tract, SWCA was formed to honor Joshua Saddler’s legacy and continue the conservation effort.
